Wide leg pants can be a pretty scary idea when you think about it; we’re all used to sleek flares and skinny jeans, and now here’s a trend that wants to add excess width to our legs! But there is a way to pull this silhoutte off while keeping your figure looking trim.

The Perfect Pants

If you’re a bit cautious about diving right in to the wide leg pants trend, take baby steps into it by choosing a pair that mainly flare from the knee to the hem instead of the entire leg. These are also a perfect choice for shorter girls who are worried about the width of the pants making them look even shorter on the bottom. The Martin Lightweight Wool Pinstriped Wide-leg Pant from Banana Republic ($108) serves this purpose in a great shade of navy.

For a more menswear inspired look, try the high waisted, pleat front Trousers R-L Catetine ($43.99) from Mango. These along with the lower waisted Alice + Olivia Eric Front Pleat Wide Leg Pant ($275) pull off the full on wide leg look, although the latter is a slightly more feminine touch.

How To Pair Them

Getting the pants is only the first step. In order to complete the look in a flattering and stylish manner, the right top and accessories are needed. Those with a long torso and a defined waist can benefit from wearing a pair of high waisted wide leg pants with a tucked in blouse and a slim belt. Go for a blouse with ruffles, puff sleeves or some type of detailing up top, like the Puff Sleeve Corset Bodysuit from Bebe ($79). Not only will it stay perfectly in place all day, the boning and vertical stripes will emphasize the slimness of your waist. A flashy and eye catching belt like the Mayle Marcelline Belt ($145) keeps things fresh and interesting.

Shorter torso? Stick to a longer wrap top or sweater like the Charcoal Jersey Wrap by Leo & Sage ($62.40). Accessorize it with a beaded drop necklace or pendant, similar to the Bezel Glass Long Necklace from Arden B ($28) and a wider belt at the natural waist, like the Premium Skinny Leather Belt by Asos ($34.22).

So don’t be afraid to try something with a little more width! Just pick the right pieces and wide leg pants suit any shape and budget.
