AsLuxe may be a new name to you, but that only makes you ahead of the game. This hot emerging line of high end, fashion forward clothing by Ashley Guidi and Sarah Wigman is straight out of Canada but will certainly be making a huge splash in the US and the world in the near future. In under three years the label has already made a splash at BC Fashion Week and has been seen on celebrities like Evangeline Lilly. We were lucky enough to chat with these two style makers about what inspires them, drives them, what trends they love and which ones they hate.
What kind of woman wears Asluxe? And what kind of statement do you hope to make with your line?
“Definitely a confident woman who wants to make a statement with what she wears, but not over the top. As well quality is important for our customers as they want to be able to wear the garments for seasons to come, not just a passing trend.”
“We want everyone who wears our clothes to make their own statement, depending how they feel. The wearer can make the clothes their own, most of our dresses transcend from a dress to a top, can be worn over tights, all can be worn with flip flops or heels, depending on the occasion or how they feel.”
“As Luxurious as “YOU” want it to be”.
So many people dream of presenting a collection at fashion week! What was it like putting together a show for BC Fashion Week?
“Stressful!! But also very rewarding, it was fun to do something that has such a creative aspect, it really pulls everything together nicely so everyone can see more where we are coming from. (More theatrical).”
“The fashion show was a great way to launch our company and we definitely plan on showing again but are focusing on other areas at this time.”
Do you see a difference between the approach to fashion in Canada versus the US? And do you consider this when designing your collections?
“Absolutely, we sell a lot more in the states and the stores order the more fashion forward pieces, in silks etc. Stores in Canada go the safer and more casual route. We don’t really consider this too much when we are designing because most of our garments can be made in silk or a jersey material so it gives buyers options.
Usually in this industry lines get more popular in the states and then Canadian start following suit.”
Your clothing is very wearable, but it certainly doesn’t look like any other brand on the market. Where do you get your inspiration and what is the design process like for you?
“Our inspiration more comes from our moods or a place that we are in our lives. I think our look comes from testing different methods out of pattern making.”
“Also because there are two of us we combine things we both think up, and add on to each others visions, which I think makes the garments go to another level.”
“We are also lucky enough to be in our target market so we know what we want and then we design it. We focus a lot on the shape of women’s bodies, what they want to hide or draw attention to, etc.”
What is your favourite piece from the Spring/Summer collection and what are your favourite (and least favourite) trends at the moment?
“Sarah’s is the bustier dress on the opening page of our website (www.asluxe.com) and Ashley’s is the shorts jumpsuit (in White with Black trim). Our favourite (trend) is big bags because we always have to carry around so much stuff. Our Least favourite would have to be Wide Leg, high waisted jeans. It makes you look to “hippie” and to “HIPPY”, they are very hard to make flattering.”
What designers do you emulate? Who are your favorite fashion icons?
“We really like Preen, Lanvin, Stella McCartney, Helmut Lang. Icons would have to be Kate Moss, Chloe Sevigny because she tries different things.”
Do you have a favorite quote about fashion?
“Fashions fade, style is eternal.” Yves Saint Laurent
“The leading cause of death among fashion models is falling through street grates.” Dave Barry
What are your future goals for Asluxe?
“We definitely want to expand our collection across the USA, and other markets such as Europe and Asia. The more growth that we obtain allows us to branch off, making larger collections, different lines and expansion (purses, shoes, ex.)”
“I would also have to say ‘Vogue’.”
